iCarly

iCarly

In 5, 4, 3, 2….. I admit it. I loved watching iCarly. It was so well written and the characters were wonderfully sarcastic. I know it’s a kid’s show, but my ex-husband and I loved watching it when it was on. iCarly premiered on September 8, 2007 and starred Miranda Cosgrove, Jennette McCurdy, Nathan Kress, and Jerry Trainor.

The Cast

Miranda Cosgrove portrayed Carly Shay, the main character. I remember her as Summer Hathaway in School of Rock. Memory, all alone in the moonlight….. She played the annoying band manager and did a wonderful job. I thought she was perfect for the character of Carly.

Jennette McCurdy played Sam Puckett, Carly’s best friend and co-host of iCarly. I had never heard of Jennette before iCarly but I thought she was hilarious. She reminds me a lot of myself. She’s a mini-me. I used to take 40 middle school students to Disneyland each year and the kids ran into Jennette there one year. She was there with her dad and one of her brothers just hanging out for the day. Jennette was very nice and posed for pictures with my students. She was basically the opposite of her character and scored major points with me that day by being nice to my kids.

I thought Nathan Kress was so adorable! He played Freddie Benson on the show and the technical producer of iCarly. I don’t understand why he wasn’t a bigger teen idol. He was just so darn cute. I had never heard of Nathan before either, but I loved him. He was so sweet and kind of dorky nerdy.

Jerry Trainor portrayed Spencer Shay in the show. He was hilarious and reminded me of a young John Ritter. I also had never heard of him before iCarly but I became a big fan. His timing was perfect and he made great funny faces.

The show had some great recurring characters, including Noah Munck who played chubby buddy Gibby. There was also Nathan Pearson who portrayed Jeremy, aka “Germy”. The show also had some wonderful guest stars which included Austin Butler, Good Charlotte, and David Archuleta.

Dan the Man

The series was created and produced by Dan Schneider. I know him from the 80’s TV show Head of the Class. He’s married to Hungry Girl Lisa Lillien. Dan has become quite the behind the scenes dude since Head of the Class. In addition to iCarly, he is the creative force behind the shows Zoey 101, Drake & Josh, What I Like About You, The Amanda Show, Kenan & Kel, All That, Victorious, Sam & Cat, Henry Danger, and more.

Sadly, iCarly ended on November 23, 2012. Miranda Cosgrove has done a lot of voice roles since then. Jeannette McCurdy reprised her role as Sam in the show Sam & Cat which also starred Ariana Grande. She recently [March 8, 2019] talked about her struggle with anorexia and bulimia. Nathan Kress is now married and has a child. What?! Little Freddie?

As of this writing, all five seasons are available on DVD. I think it’s also shown a lot in reruns. I haven’t seen iCarly for many years. Maybe it’s time to relive a few episodes.
