Matthew Broderick

Many people first knew of Matthew Broderick when he played Ferris Bueller in 1986, but I was a fan even before then. I love the movie WarGames. I didn’t really know who Broderick was at the time, but I know I loved the movie. WarGames came out in 1983, so I was a fan three years before most everyone else had heard of him. “Do you want to play a game?”

Matthew John Broderick, born March 21, 1962 in Manhattan, New York, seems to be able to do it all. He has done TV, movies, Broadway, comedy….and he’s kind of cute. He has been married to Sarah Jessica Parker since 1997. They have three children together, a son and twin daughters. Matthew’s father, James Broderick, was also an actor. He portrayed the dad on the 70’s TV show Family. Remember that? It was Kristy McNichol’s first big show. Anyway….

Even though WarGames is my favorite Matthew Broderick movie, Ferris Bueller is a close second. My favorite parts of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off are the early ones where Ferris is screwing around in his room. I love the clarinet scene, the keyboard scene, where he dances along to I Dream of Jeannie, where he hacks into the computer and changes his attendance record while the principal is watching it happen on his end (which by the way is very similar to when he hacks into the computer to change his grades in Wargames), and a bunch of others. Trivia

• Broderick was in a car crash in which two other people were killed. He was with his then girlfriend Jennifer Grey at the time of the crash.
• Jennifer Grey played his sister on Ferris Bueller. In real life, they were engaged at one point.
• Rumor has it that he was the first choice to play Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties. I can see him in that role.
• Michael J. Fox was considered for the role of Ferris. Interesting….
• Broderick’s feature film debut was Max Dugan Returns in 1983 which was also Kiefer Sutherland’s debut.
• Broderick was considered for the role in Risky Business which made Tom Cruise a star.
• Another Cruise role he was considered for was Maverick in Top Gun.
• Broderick was cast as Jeffrey Willis in The Flamingo Kid but dropped out. Matt Dillon took over the role.

 

Did you all see Matthew Broderick a couple years ago as Jackie’s boyfriend in The Connors? It just freaked my freak knowing that was Ferris Bueller. Broderick is continuing to act and be very successful. I can’t believe I’ve been a fan of his for almost 40 years. Time flies. I leave you with a quote from Ferris Bueller. “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
