The Brady Bunch Episode #20
Welcome to my review of The Brady Bunch Episode #20. This episode is the one where Marcia gets braces and looks really ugly. Her date bails on her so everyone tries to find her a date so she doesn’t hate herself more. It’s just one big pity party. This episode originally aired on February 13, 1970 when the number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 was Thank You (Falettin Me Be Mice Elf Agin) by Sly & the Family Stone.
This episode opens with Carol and Alice fake cooking in the kitchen. Carol is tearing the lettuce and Alice is pretending to make spaghetti. Mike walks in and they talk about Marcia’s dentist appointment and how she had to have braces put on.
The next scene shows Marcia looking in the mirror and smiling at herself with her new hardware. She breaks down and says “I’m ugly, ugly, ugly!” Yep. “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia. Ugly, ugly, ugly.”
Marcia is telling mom how she doesn’t want to go to the school dance in two weeks because she’s too ugly. Carol says some sappy crap and gets Marcia to smile. Yikes! That’s a lot of metal.
Alice is hemming Marcia’s dress for the party and her braces keep disappearing in the scene. Oops.
Marcia’s date, Alan, stops by to tell her he can’t go to the dance after all. He claims his family is going out of town and he has to go with them. I think it’s really because Marcia has the gangsta grill thing going on. Marcia has yet another breakdown and says how she hates everybody. I think she’s bipolar.

Since Alan can’t go, Carol and Mike decide to ask a friend’s son to take her. I guess that wouldn’t be bad, but Greg and Alice also each asked a boy. So now Marcia has three boys who have been bribed to take her to the dance. When they come over to the house to talk to her, Marcia freaks out and hates on people again. The girl needs some meds.
Alan comes over and says his parents aren’t going away after all. Marcia assumes he’s being paid to take her. After Alan says a bunch of sissy sappy crap, she believes that he truly likes her.
Everything turns out wonderfully when Alan shows up for the big dance. Seems he had a bike accident and nearly knocked all of his teeth out. He too now has braces. So funny! (Where’s my sarcasm font?) The moral of the story is that it’s not how you look on the outside. The important thing is what’s on the inside. Sounds like the cry of an ugly person to me.
