Emma Bunton

Emma Bunton

Were you a fan of The Spice Girls? I probably know some of their songs if I heard them, but I did not follow them when they were popular. I know a bit about Mel B because she was on Dancing with the Stars.  Today I will be talking about Emma Bunton, who you Spice Girl fans know as Baby Spice.

Born in London, England on January 21, 1976, Emma Lee Bunton was actually an actress before becoming Baby Spice in The Spice Girls. She portrayed a mugger and a stripper. Nice. The other four Spice Girls – Melanie Chisholm, Mel Brown, Geri Halliwell, and Victoria Beckham were part of the group first. The fifth member was originally Michelle Stephenson who apparently lacked commitment. She was replaced with Abigail Kis. I don’t know what happened to her, but Emma Bunton finally came on board in 1994.

The Spice Girls

The Spice Girls released their first single, Wannabe, in July 1996. The song hit number one in 37 different countries. That’s a pretty nice start for the group. Wannabe became the biggest selling debut single by an all-girl group and the biggest selling single of all time by an all-female group. Their success continued and there was talk of Beatlemania. The press talked of “Spice Mania” and called the girls the “Fab Five”. Geri Halliwell quit the band in May of 1998 and the group took a hiatus.

Emma Bunton released her first solo album in April 2001. It did pretty well. She had a couple of hit singles from the album and it ended up being certified gold. Her second solo album came out in February of 2004 and it also was certified gold. That album contained three hit singles. Bunton released another solo album a few years later and then nothing until this year. Her fourth solo album, My Happy Place, was released on April 12, 2019.

Trivia

I guess there was a Spice Girls reunion tour earlier this year. All but Victoria Beckham took part. It started just a few weeks ago in Dublin, Ireland. Spice World 2019 Tour is the fourth concert tour by The Spice Girls. It started on May 24, 2019 and is scheduled to end on June 15th, so not much of a tour.

I’m not sure what Emma Bunton has planned after the Spice World Tour, but I’m guessing it has something to do with family and music. I wish her well.
