1990’s Teen Idols
Hello and welcome to my fifth blog about Teen Idols of the Decades. I previously reviewed teen idols from the 1950’s, 1960’s, 1970’s, and 1980’s. Click here to check those out. Today I will be writing about the 1990’s Teen Idols. There were some cuties from that era. It also marked the beginning of the Boy Band craze which appears to still be going strong today.
As the 90’s approached, I was old and not into the teen magazines. I had already graduated from college and was trying to be an adult, something I’m still working on today. I do know that New Kids on the Block, Mark Paul Gosselaar, Luke Perry, Jason Priestley, Joey Lawrence, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Devon Sawa, Jonathan Brandis, Leo DiCaprio, and Hanson were some of the big 1990’s Teen idols.
New Kids on the Block
I was not a fan of New Kids on the Block, but they did kind of pave the way for the twelve million boy bands who came after them. NKOTB are now in their late 40’s but they seem to still record and go out on tour now and then. Right on.
Mark Paul Gosselaar
Mark Paul Gosselaar was the break out star from Saved By The Bell even though I thought Mario Lopez was way cuter. Gosselaar was a cute boy but I don’t think was as handsome as he got older. Both Gosselaar and Lopez were successful as they got older. Their sidekick, Screech (Dustin Diamond), was not as lucky. He’s had run-ins with the law and done some porn.
Luke Perry played Dylan McKay on Beverly Hills, 90210. Dylan was a high school student. Luke was 46. I’m exaggerating a bit. He wasn’t that much older than his character but his receding hairline made him seem older. He’s an actor I respect. He’s got some chops.
Jason Priestley was also part of Beverly Hills, 90210. Shannen Doherty played his sister on the show and said it was very hard portraying his sister because he was so hot. He is still acting and very into race cars. I think he broke his back once when he crashed his race car into the wall at 180 mph. Yikes!
Joey Lawrence was a cute little boy. He seemed to try too hard to be a hunky dude as he got older. It’s not sexy if you have to try that hard. I think he sang and acted and had great hair. He played a dumb guy on Blossom. I wonder how much acting went into that role.
Jonathan Taylor Thomas
I love Jonathan Taylor Thomas. He was a Brady kid on one of the Brady Bunch specials. I liked him then. I liked him even more when he became Randy Taylor on Home Improvement. He was a cute kid with great comedic timing.
I just saw Devon Sawa on a Netflix show called Somewhere Between. He’s a good actor. I also remember him in Final Destination. I think he hit it big in the teen mags when he starred with Jonathan Taylor Thomas in Wild America. He was a cutie and is not hard to look at now either.
Jonathan Brandis had done quite a bit of acting before becoming a teen idol in the 90’s when he was part of the TV show seaQuest DSV. Sadly, he died at the age of 27 after hanging himself. I wrote a blog about him here if you want to check it out.
Leo DiCaprio started on Growing Pains but ended up being a huge star. He seemed to have back to back to back successful movies. I think the major Leo Mania started with the movie Titanic. He’s still one of my favorite actors today.
Mmmbop, ba duba dop. I was a fan of the brothers Hanson. I think they were super talented kids who happened to look good. They got a lot of their fans because of their groovy looks, but those boys have ability. These cute little boys are all now in their 30’s. They are all married with lots of children. And they’re still doing their thing. They are still touring and recording. I love it.
So there you have it. That’s my 1990’s Teen Idols review. Who do you think I left out? I know that Britney Spears, ‘N Sync, and the Backstreet Boys technically appeared in the late 90’s, but I’m going to save them for my 2000’s Teen Idols blog since that’s when their popularity really took off. Who were your favorite 1990’s Teen Idols? Comment and let me know. Take my survey! Please check back in a few days for my 2000’s Teen Idols. Yay!Follow Me On...
